Ever since Honey opened the floodgates, dance movies have been all the rage in the cinemas, with the likes of Stomp the Yard and the Step Up trilogy. Predictable storylines, mediocre acting, and a few moments of chair gripping and toe curling dance battles. I don’t know about you but I’d like to skip the first two and jump to the adrenaline pumping dance moments.
Type Step Up into Youtube and you don’t get their sappy romance moments, you get the dance battles. Juste Debout, was all about the dance battles. 100% freestyle dance battles.
Pre-selections are done in 15 countries scattered all across the globe, such as Netherlands and the UK, with Singapore being South-East Asia’s only pre-selection spot. The final two from each category will then proceed to compete in the World Finals over at Paris, France. The four main categories in this year’s Juste Debout, would be House, Locking, Popping, and Hip Hop.
Street dancers all across South-East Asia came over to Singapore in hopes of winning that coveted spots in the World Finals, and this included our very own top class dancers from Singapore.
Below is a video of Singapore’s represent Alif and Zaihar AKA Beyond Nutz, in the hip hop semi finals, up against Destiny Family from Vietnam. Almost like a battle of pride amongst countries, I feel that our dancers from the different categories did justice to our little country, holding their own against the other countries as well.
The finals as expected, is pretty darn epic. A colossal audience, thumping music, incredible pressure. Take a look for yourself what it’s like in the World Finals.
Big day for street dance, as our minister announces how he realises that we have the talent, and is willing to spend money on the creation of an official Singapore crew.
No more searching for dance moments in movies guys, just type in Juste Debout, or better yet, come down next year and witness some world class street dance for yourself.
